Tip 1
Embed Index in PDFs
Acrobat 8 Pro lets you embed
an index into a PDF,
which really helps when
searching for text in long
documents. The next time
you have to wait longer
than you like when finding
text in a long PDF, try this:
choose Advanced> Document
Processing> Manage Embedded
Index. Click the Embed Index
button. That’s it.
Tip 2
New Document,
Same Size
In many Adobe applications,
such as Illustrator
and Photoshop, you can
instantly create a new document
that’s the same size
as the last new document
that you created: just press
Option-Command-N.This bypasses
the New Document
dialog box, using all its previous
settings for size, orientation
and color mode.
Tip 3
InDesign Text Drag Tip
In InDesign CS3, if you
drag and drop a selection
of text to a new location, it
will take on the formatting
of its destination if you
hold down the Shift key
before letting up on the
mouse button.
Tip 4
Copy ALL
Linked Pictures
In QuarkXPress, choosing
File> Collect for Output will
collect the pictures used in
all picture boxes, including
those on the pasteboard.
In InDesign, choosing File>
Package… collects only the
pictures in frames on the
pages. If you want to collect
the pictures from the
pasteboard as well, use the
Links palette: select all the
pictures in the Links
palette, then choose Copy
Links To… from the Links
palette menu.
Tip 5
Create New Colors
in the Measurements
Palette
In QuarkXPress 7, you can
create and apply a new color
directly from the Measurements
palette, which
saves you a trip to the Colors
palette. Just click and
hold on the Color chooser
in any Measurements
palette tab where it appears
(Frame, Box, Text,
Drop Shadow, etc.). At the
top of the list of named
colors is New… Select that to
open the Edit Color dialog,
where you can create and
name a
new color.
Tip 6
Split Windows
in QuarkXPress
QuarkXPress 7 lets you see
your Project in multiple
windows or in one split
window—just choose
Window> New Window or Window>
Split Window. Each window
can display any page
from any Layout. It can
have its own view percentage,
and be resized. You
can even drag and drop
items between Layouts (which was not possible in
QuarkXPress 6)! To close a
split window, you can either
click the red circle at
the top of the vertical
scroll bar, or choose Window>
Split Window> Remove All.
Tip 7
Better Sharpening
in Photoshop
In most RGB images, the
Blue channel is the noisiest.
So try sharpening just
the Red and Green channels,
then use the Despeckle
filter on the blue
channel. For CMYK images,
sharpen the C,M
and Y and despeckle the
Black channel.

Tip 8
Instant Color Balance
One easy way to color balance
your photos is to use
aWhiBal card. Before,
during or after taking photos
in a specific lighting
condition, take a shot with
theWhiBal card in it. If
you shoot in Raw format,
you can then use any Raw
photo converter to adjust
them all (theWhiBal card
is certified to L*= ~75,
which is optimum for all
Raw converters). If you
shoot in TIF or JPG format,
you can use their free
plug-in for Photoshop to
balance all the photos.
WhiBal comes in three
sizes, each including a carrying
case and table stand:
2 x 3.5" ($30), 3.5 x 6"
($37), and 8.5 x 11" ($50).
Their website has a video
that demonstrates its use.

CS3Clean:
Fix for CS3 Installer
Some users are having
trouble installing Adobe’s
Creative Suite 3 if they had
already installed the Photoshop
CS3 Beta. To avoid
possible trouble, uninstall
the beta by using Adobe’s
uninstaller, found in Applications/
Utilities/Adobe Installers.
If that doesn’t help,
Adobe has a useful free
utility called CS3Clean
that should fix the problem.
CS3Clean removes
the Adobe support files
that the standard uninstallation
process leaves behind.
This is a last-ditcheffort
utility and should be
used only if you haven’t
been able to get your CS3
applications to install any
other way. Get it at
